At around 4 AM on Monday, a balding man with a closely cropped red
beard went to see his former wife. The ex-Marine who usually walked with
a cane was known by neighbors to carry a sidearm. But as the residents
of Lower Salford Township, Pennsylvania, slept on this particular night,
the 35-year-old allegedly crept up the
stairs of the two-story apartment and opened fire, fatally shooting his
ex, Nicole Hill. After apparently taking his two young children from
her home to a neighbor's house, Bradley William Stone got in a car and disappeared.
A neighbor told local ABC affiliate Action News, "I heard 3 or 4 gunshots. I heard the kids yelling, saying, 'Mommy no! mommy no!' He kept saying, 'We gotta go, we gotta go.'"
That's the last time anyone's seen Stone, who's accused of killing six family members on Monday. District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said in a statement that the Pennsburg resident is armed and dangerous, and she advised locals to stay indoors until he is apprehended. She added that Stone might be wearing military fatigues, and urged the public to notify police immediately if they catch a glimpse of the guy.
The timeline of events is still murky, but police said Hill's 75-year-old grandmother has also been killed about eight miles away, in Lansdale. According to NBC News, bodies were found at a house owned by Hill's sister, too. After police used a diversionary tactic to break inside, they found a man who was injured but still alive. Authorities haven't identified him.
And after a daylong manhunt, it's unclear if a SWAT team is any closer to subduing the suspect. For hours, they've been staking out a Pennsburg home decorated with a Marine flag. Around 2:40 PM., they shot tear gas inside, and around 5:30, they brought in a K9 Unit.
Stone, who has been described as 5'10" and about 195 pounds, might not even be inside. Around 6 PM, District Attorney Ferman announced: "As we stand here, we do not know where [Stone] is." She said cops were checking out local places where he was known to spend time. SWAT vehicles are blocking off most of downtown.
The district attorney hasn't released any information about the suspect's mental health, nor has she hinted at a motive for the shootings. However, Hill's neighbor told the New York Daily News that she was involved in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband.
